Michael Yonnotti announced his resignation from the Canal Winchester Board of Education effective Sept. 28.

In his letter to school district officials, Yonnotti stated that the “contention and vitriol” surrounding Canal Winchester Schools’ mask policy has had “an adverse effect both physically and mentally on me personally and my family.” He said he consulted with medical professionals and they advised him “to retire from the board.”

The board must name a replacement within 30 days of the resignation date. The newly appointed member will serve until the end of Yonnotti’s original elected term of Dec. 31, 2021. If the appointed member desires to continue serving, he or she must run in the next general election.

Yonnotti has been a Canal Winchester Board of Education member since 2010.

According to a press release from Canal Winchester Local Schools, “Having a bachelor of science degree and a master of arts in education from The Ohio State University, Yonnotti brought decades of educational experience to the table. A seasoned education veteran with both a principal’s and a superintendent’s license, Yonnotti understood the growing and changing needs of preparing students for their futures.”

“We appreciate Mr. Yonnotti’s dedication to the families of Canal Winchester Local School District for the past decade. His support of our mission for Empowering All Students for Success will be greatly missed,” said Superintendent James Sotlar. “We will miss his expertise and passion for education. It has been an honor to work with Mr. Yonnotti, and we wish him well as his time with the Canal Winchester Local School District comes to an end.”

According to Ohio law, people serving on Ohio school boards must be at least age 18, district residents, and registered voters.

The board will review all applications and decide on the replacement at its Oct. 18, regular meeting.
