The Jefferson Local school board voted at its Oct. 27 meeting to hire Joe Palazzo to replace Jeannette Haskins who was reassigned as the high school’s language arts teacher. Haskins replaces Katlyn Gonclaves who resigned.
For the past 15 years, Palazzo has been guidance counselor at Hilliard Darby High School and before that at Columbus Bishop Ready. He earned degrees at Ohio University and The Ohio State University and coached the Ready baseball team.
The board also recognized the services of Shawn Buescher, who in addition to his duties as football coach and dean of students had served as athletic director for the last five years.
“It’s a difficult and underappreciated job,” said Superintendent William Mullett as he presented Buescher with a plaque in recognition of his service. “If anything goes wrong in athletics, he hears about it.”
Matt Adams is the new high school athletic director. The board approved a monthly cell phone reimbursement of $40 and 20 extended service days this school year for Adams. The board also accepted his resignation as part-time weight room supervisor.
Also accepted was the retirement of elementary teacher Doris Pickens, which takes effect at the end of May 2015.
The board accepted several donations:
- $1,650 from the high school Athletic Boosters for golf fees and $5,237 for high jump equipment for the track team;
- $1,000 from an anonymous donor to Norwood Elementary School for playground equipment, athletic shoes and other necessary items; and
- miscellaneous school supplies from Zion Lutheran Church.
The board also approved contracts with Madison-Champaign Education Service Center for specialty work, including: behavior specialist services at $65.69 per hour plus mileage; hearing intervention specialist services at $47.81 per hour plus mileage; and vision intervention specialist services at $98.91 per hour.
The next Jefferson Local school board meeting is set for 7 p.m. Nov. 10 in the high school auditeria.
