Whitehall Recreation plans all treats, no tricks this fall

Whitehall Parks and Recreation is gearing up for fall activities, including things that go bump in the night.  

As a Beggar’s Night alternative, the parks department is partnering with City of Refuge Baptist Church to host Fall Festival at John Bishop Park, October 31 between 6-8 p.m.  

Activities will be similar to the annual Family Fun Day.  It will offer wholesome family fun, including games, entertainment and food.  

The event was formerly held at Whitehall Baptist Church, and was so well- attended it outgrew the church facility.  Park and Recreation Director Terry Gee is hoping this will be a good time for families in a safe environment.  For more information, contact Darrell Hammock at 453-5556.  

The following classes will be offered at Community Park, 402 N. Hamilton Road:

 

•Ballet classes are offered during the week.  These classes are on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. for ages 3-6; 6:30 for ages 7-11; and 7:30 for ages 12 and up.  Classes will be taught by Dana Watters, and meet once a week for eight weeks at a cost of $25 for the entire session.  Discounts are given when signing up more than one child in the same family for the same class.  The next session of classes will begin October 30.

•Are you looking for ways to relieve stress, or do you just want to become more limber?  You can solve these issues by attending yoga classes.  Adult classes will be on Tuesdays at 6:30-7:30 and Thursdays at 7-8.  Cost is $3 per class.  The instructors will be Karen Sturwold on Tuesdays and Cynthia Clem on Thursdays.  Participants should bring their own mats.  

 

•Becky Fisher will be teaching beginning tap dancing to ages 6-12 for eight weeks beginning October 1.  Classes will be on Mondays at 6-6:45.  Cost for the series is $25.

•Becky Fisher is also teaching aerobics Mondays and Thursdays at 7-8. Cost is $3 per class and is ongoing.

•Hip Hop dance classes will be Thursdays 6-6:45 for children between 6 and 12.  Eight classes will cost $25, with the first class beginning September 27.  Instructor is Becky Fisher.

•Is your child interested in drawing?  Enroll them in the Young Rembrandts drawing program.  Classes are Wednesdays, September 12-October 17 from 6-7 for ages 6-13.  Cost for the six classes if $36.  Call Abby Bryan at 626-0026

•Sign-ups for Whitehall Youth Basketball League will be held on Saturdays, October 6-November 10 from 10 a.m. to noon.  Cost to play is $50, and children in grades 1-6 are eligible to play.  Children may not turn 13 before January 1, 2008.  Any questions, call Terry Gee at 475-5719.

•At John Bishop Park on Saturday, September 22 the department will hold its annual Punt, Pass & Kick competition for ages 8-15.  Registration can be done the day of the event between 9-10 a.m.  Competition will begin after registration.  Girls and boys will compete separately, and winners will advance on to the district event in October.  A child’s eligibility will be based on their age on December 31, 2007.  Cleats of any type may not be worn by participants while competing.

•NHL Street Hockey League (not roller hockey) will begin at Etna Road Elementary School October 18, every Thursday from 6:45-8:30 p.m.  The program is for ages 8-13,  cost for the league is $20, which includes all equipment.  Sign up at Community Park.

•The Whitehall Litter Task Force will conduct a clean-up on Saturday, October 6.  Any interested group or individuals should meet at the City Hall parking lot, 360 S. Yearling Road at 9 a.m.  We are in need of volunteers for the event.  Lunch will be provided.  If you have any questions, contact Terry Gee at 205-7261.
