Paper recycling at Parkview
Parkview United Methodist Church, 344 S. Algonquin Ave., is providing the community with recycling bins for paper products. Bring newspapers, magazines, junk mail, etc., to the green and yellow bins in the church parking lot. No cardboard or phone books will be accepted. Questions, call 875-7231.
Exercise for seniors
Seniors are invited to exercise on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 55 Pasadena Ave. Men and women aged 50 to 90 and up have exercised at the facility since 2001. The instructor leads each session with warm-ups, play balls, resistance bands, hand weights, some low-impact aerobics and balance activities. VFW Post 6065
VFW Post 6065 will hold their meetings on the third Thursday of each month at 5 p.m. Meetings last about one hour and are held at the Prairie Township Senior Center, 4616 West Broad St. Those interested in getting involved or volunteering time should attend a meeting. The Ladies Auxiliary meets at 6:30 p.m. The motivations of the VFW are patriotic, historical, and educational. Golden Age Center
The Salvation Army Golden Age Center, 2300 W. Mound St., invites anyone aged 60 or over to attend on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., for lunch, crafts, movies, BINGO, games, health and fitness, and fun. GriefShare support group
GriefShare recovery support group (your journey from mourning to Joy) will be hosted by Cypress Wesleyan Church in Galloway each Sunday at 6 p.m. through Dec. 7. The class will meet at the District Center, 457 Alton-Darby Creek Road. This is the brick building north of the church, close to the railroad tracks. DivorceCare seminar
DivorceCare recovery seminar and support group will meet at Cypress Wesleyan Church, 377 Alton-Darby Creek Roadeach Sunday at 6 p.m., through Nov. 23. There will also be one session held on Saturday, Sept. 27. DC4K (DivorceCare for Kids) will be offered at the same time on Sundays and child/ren, ages 5-12, are welcome to attend if you are in the DivorceCare class. The classes are free, however, there is a charge for the workbook ($12.00 for DivorceCare and $15.00 per child for DC4K – scholarships available). Look Good, Feel Better
Look Good, Feel Better is a program designed for women undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation treatment to help them look and feel their best. Sending help to the troops
The office of Dr. Michael Alexander, D.O., 3219 Sullivant Ave., is having a raffle to raise money for postage and to buy items that are not donated to send to our troops in Iraq. Raffle items include Ohio State statues, Pampered Chef items, Home Interior items, clothing, Christmas items, restaurant gift certificates a fresh water pearl necklace and more. Ticket prices vary according to item.
Items that can be donated are personal hygiene items (women are having a very difficult time finding personal hygiene items), baby wipes, dryer sheets, chap stick, insect spray, individual drink mixes, microwave popcorn, snacks, food that can be microwaved or eaten from a sealed container (cannot contain pork or pork by-products), beef jerkey CDs, DVDs, hard candies, chewing gum, crossword puzzles, toilet paper, socks, shorts and t-shirts.

Free home repair workshop
Homes on the Hill CDC will host a free homeowners workshop on Oct. 29 from 6-8 p.m. at Homes on the Hill, 12 S. terrace Ave. At the workshop, individuals will learn to maintain their homes through basic repairs and regular home inspections. Comets perform with Buckeyes
The Central Crossing marching band competed Oct. 4 in the Horseshoe for the 2008 Buckeye Invitational. Thirty two bands from in and around central Ohio competed in this all day event. The comets took top honors being awarded outstanding overall marching, outstanding overall general effect, first place class AA and grand champion.
Crossroads Open House

Westgate/Camp Chase blockwatches co-host meeting
Westgate Blockwatch and Camp Chase Blockwatch are hosting a combined blockwatch meeting on Oct. 28 at Parkview Methodist Church at 7 p.m. This meeting is open to all Hilltop residents! Councilman Andrew Ginther will be the featured speaker as his city council subcommittee is safety. He will address budget shortfalls that effect our police, new Police Academy classes, and the helicopter unit. There will also be a panel composed of Assistant City Attorney Jody Spurlock, Code Enforcement Officer Danielle Weber and Sgt. Joe Horton of 19th Precinct. They will be discuss foreclosed and abandoned homes and the process that the city uses to take care of properties and how it effects our neighborhoods. Members of SWAT, canine, mounted, and helicopter units will be at the meeting a half-hour before it begins, at 6:30 p.m.

Lincoln Village cleanup
The Lincoln Village/West Broad Clean and Safe Community project have scheduled their last litter cleanup for the year for Saturday, Nov. 1. If you would like to volunteer, call 571-1274. Volunteers should meet at the Lincoln Lodge Retirement Center, 4950 W. Broad St., at 8:30 a.m. for a hearty breakfast, compliments of Lincoln Lodge and Jamie Mueller. Any students participating in the cleanup will receive a certificate of participation for community service. This cleanup is sponsored by a grant received from the United Way of Central Ohio and the Columbus Foundation.
West Side Dolphins fundraiser
The West Side Dolphins mini football team is hosting a fundraiser for their trip to Cleveland for the Midwest Football Championships. Home and Garden Tour date change
The Hilltop Home and Garden Tour committee is seeking nominations for the June 2009 tour. The tour will now take place on June 13, from 4 until 8 p.m. The new deadline to nominate a home and/or garden is Oct. 31 by midnight. Each year, the Hilltop Home and Garden Tour will feature a different neighborhood from the Hilltop. The 2009 Home and Garden Tour will feature homes of Westgate, and is co-hosted by Friends of the Hilltop, Friends of Westgate Park, and the Westgate Neighbors Association. All nominated homes and/or gardens must be located within the boundaries of Westgate, and are subject to committee approval. Best Years in Fellowship
Cypress Wesleyan Church, 377 Alton Darby Creek Road, will host their senior adult ministries “Best Years Fellowship” with a luncheon on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 11:30 a.m. in the Cypress Café. The Cypress Christian School choir will be performing after lunch. Cost is $5.
First Saturday at Green Lawn
A man who served on the state fair board for 20 years is being recognized for his achievements at the First Saturday at Green Lawn program Nov. 1, along with the many people who volunteered their time inrecent weeks to help with storm clean up.
Historian Lavon Shook will be speaking on the life of John Hancock Klippart, who was an agriculture journalist and later served on the state fair board. He, his wife and daughter Josephine, an accomplished artist who helped start the Ohio Watercolor Society, are among the 150,000 people interred at Green Lawn.
This monthly program recognizes people who are buried at Green Lawn who had an impact on life in central Ohio and beyond. It is held at 11 a.m. at the Huntington Chapel in the center of Green Lawn, 1000 Greenlawn Ave.
After Shook’s presentation, Green Lawn will recognize the many central Ohio people who volunteered nearly 500 hours to help clean up broken limbs and uprooted trees on the 360 acres after the Sept. 14 windstorm.
Senior luncheon
There will be a senior luncheon Nov. 11 at noon at Westgate United Methodist Church, 61 S. powell Ave. They will serve a traditional turkey dinner. Open to the oublic, donations accepted.

Bishop Ready presents “Our Town”
Bishop Ready High School’s fall theatre production of Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town” will be presented on Friday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 9 at both 2 and 7 p.m. at the high school, 707 Salisbury Road (Salisbury at Mound), in Columbus. FHHS marching band named Reserve Champion
On Oct. 11, the Franklin Heights High School Marching Band participated in two competitions. The first, an OMEA competition, took place at Lockland High School in Cincinnati. The band placed fourth overall and earned a Superior rating at that competition.
The second event took place at the Mid-States Competition in Lebanon. The band took home the following awards: Best Overall Music, First Place Class AAAA and Reserve Champion. They also earned a Superior rating for their performance. This entitles them to compete at the Mid-States Finals to be held Nov. 1, in Lebanon. The band will first compete in the OMEA State Finals, Oct. 25, in Dublin, Ohio.
Empty Bowls luncheon
Columbia Heights United Methodist Church, 775 Galloway Road, will host an Empty Bowls event to “Help Feed the hungry…one bowl at a time.” The event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 15, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Join them for a soup and bread luncheon.
