Paper recycling at Parkview

Parkview United Methodist Church, 344  S. Algonquin Ave., is providing the community with recycling bins for paper products. Bring newspapers, magazines, junk mail, etc., to the green and yellow bins in the church parking lot. No cardboard or phone books will be accepted. Questions, call 875-7231.

Exercise for seniors

Seniors are invited to exercise on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 55 Pasadena Ave. Men and women aged 50 to 90 and up have exercised at the facility since 2001. The instructor leads each session with warm-ups, play balls, resistance bands, hand weights, some low-impact aerobics and balance activities. Each participant can adapt the routine to his/her comfort level. The cost is $35 for each eight-week session. Call the instructor, Lori Vazquez, at 989-4595 with questions.

VFW Post 6065

VFW Post 6065 will hold their meetings on the third Thursday of each month at 5 p.m. Meetings last about one hour and are held at the Prairie Township Senior Center, 4656 West Broad St. Those interested in getting involved or volunteering time should attend a meeting. The Ladies Auxiliary meets at 6:30 p.m. The motivations of the VFW are patriotic, historical, and educational. They strive to perpetuate the memory and history of their dead, and to assist their widows and orphans. Call Will Davis at 309-0171 for further information.

Golden Age Center

The Salvation Army Golden Age Center, 2300 W. Mound St., invites anyone aged 60 or over to attend on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., for lunch, crafts, movies, BINGO, games, health and fitness, and fun. Call Ellen Marvin, senior director, at 274-7600, ext. 108, one day in advance to reserve lunch for $1.25 per day. Fee for expenses is $9 per month.

Westland Area Commission

The next meeting of the Westland Area Commission will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, XXXX, at Doctors’ Hospital, 5100 W. Broad St. Area residents are encouraged to attend the meeting and speak with commission members about concerns they have in the community.

Holy Rosary class of 1953

Free plumbing repair workshop

Homes on the Hill CDC will host a free homeowner education workshop geared towards homeowners on Aug. 25 from 6-8 p.m. at 12 S. Terrace Ave. At the workshop, individuals will learn to maintain their homes through basic repairs and regular home inspections. The course is open to the public and free of charge.

The upcoming workshop will focus on plumbing basics and preventative maintenance. Guest speaker Cliff Spruill, rehab tech for the city of Columbus, will take questions and demonstrate simple home repairs.

West High class of 1963

The West High School class of 1963 is having their 45th class reunion Oct. 3-4. Friday evening, attendees will gather at Magly Field for the West Homecoming Game followed by a casual time from 9-11 p.m. at O’Charlie’s at I-270 and Georgesville Road. No reservations needed for the Friday events. Saturday will feature dinner at the Florentine Restaurant, 907 W. Broad St., from 4-8 p.m. Reservations are needed. Westland boosters cruise-in

The Westland High School Band Boosters will be hosting a cruise in on Sept. 7 from 11 a.m. unil 3 p.m. The cruise in will benefit our marching band. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. for $10.  Preregistration is $7 until Sept. 1. Dash plaques will be awarded to the first 50 cars registered. Food, door prizes, raffles and music will be available. “Healthy Eating for Diabetics”

2008 Labor Day Telethon

American Legion Post 532, 1571 Demorest Road, will host a remote location for the 2008 Labor Day Telethon. The festivities begin with a breakfast on Sept. 1 from 8-11 a.m. and continue until 8 p.m. There will also be a horseshoe tournament, children’s activities, hot food from the grill, a cornhole tournament, raffles, door prizes, and fundraising activities. This event is open to the public. Money collected helps pay to send children with Muscular Dystrophy to summer camp and helps fund research efforts as well as assist in providing medical supplies and devices to the handicapped adults and children in central Ohio. All donations are tax deductible.

Farmer’s market

The Westside International Farmer’s Market will be held each Thursday through Oct. 16 from 3-7 p.m. at the Hilltop Business Center, 3600 Sullivant Ave.  Vendors are still needed for this growing market. 2008 WHSA Hall of Fame

The 2008 West High School Alumni Hall of Fame will be honored at a buffet dinner and ceremony in the school library on Sept. 5. A social time will begin at 5 p.m., followed by a buffet dinner at 5:30 p.m. Friends, family and alumni are invited to attend. The cost is $15 and reservations are required. GriefShare support group

GriefShare recovery support group (your journey from mourning to Joy) will be hosted by Cypress Wesleyan Church in Galloway each Sunday at 6 p.m. Sept. 14  through Dec. 7. The class will meet at the District Center, 457 Alton-Darby Creek Road. This is the brick building north of the church, close to the railroad tracks. DivorceCare seminar

DivorceCare recovery seminar and support group will meet at Cypress Wesleyan Church, 377 Alton-Darby Creek Roadeach Sunday at 6 p.m., Sept. 14 through Nov. 23. There will also be one session held on Saturday, Sept. 27. DC4K (DivorceCare for Kids) will be offered at the same time on Sundays and child/ren, ages 5-12, are welcome to attend if you are in the DivorceCare class. The classes are free, however, there is a charge for the  workbook ($12.00 for DivorceCare and $15.00 per child for DC4K – scholarships available). Rock On Sullivant

The West Side Free Store, 3030 Sullivant Ave., will hold Rock On Sullivant, an after school experience for elementary aged children, on Wednesday afternoons beginning Sept. 10. Activities include art, snacks, time for homework, computers and games. A Home of Your Own

Homes on the Hill CDC will hold the homebuyer education course, “A Home of Your Own,” geared toward first-time homebuyers, Aug. 30, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., at HOTH, 12 S. Terrace Ave. The course is open to the public and free of charge. The workshop will cover topics ranging from financial literacy, credit and mortgage loans to how to choose a realtor, home inspections, and the closing process. Guest speakers will include area professionals in the fields of lending, real estate, and housing. This workshop may be a requirement for some down payment assistance programs and first time homebuyer loan programs.

HOTH is a HUD approved housing counseling agency providing certified training in pre-purchase, post-purchase, and foreclosure counseling for homebuyers.  

Green Lawn seeking volunteers

Central Ohioans looking for a community project for Make A Difference Day on Oct. 25 can perform volunteer service at Green Lawn Cemetery, 1000 Greenlawn Ave.

A variety of tasks are available for individuals and groups who will be assisting the ground crew in preparing the area’s largest cemetery for winter. Many of the tasks involve fall landscaping chores.

A picnic is being planned for all volunteers when their assignment is completed.

Girls Club

The Grove City Girls Club will sponsor its seventh annual golf outing on Sept. 6 at Foxfire Golf Course. A shotgun start will begin at 1:30 p.m. The cost is $65 per person and that includes golf, the cart and dinner. For more information, contact Kim McCutchen at 875-7001.

WNA hosts Mugs and Muffins

The Westgate Neighbors Association will host coffee with neighbors at the Mugs and Muffins events held every other Saturday (Aug. 23, Sept. 6, and Sept. 20) from 8-10 a.m. at the Westgate Park open shelter house.

WNA meeting

The Westgate Neighbors Association’s next meeting will be held Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 7 p.m. in the West High School cafeteria. The artist who will be executing the mural on the racquetball court will attend and present a mockup of his design.

WNA conducting survey

First Saturday at Green Lawn

Former Columbus Police officer Alexis Keeler who owned a house in Olde Town East is being recognized at the First Saturday at Green Lawn program on Sept. 6.

Steve Daoust, an Olde Town East resident who discovered Keeler was the original owner of his house, will talk about Keeler and his law enforcement career as well as tell how he made the discovery of the original owner and what he is doing with the information.

The program, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 11 a.m. in the Huntington Chapel at Green Lawn, 1000 Greenlawn Ave.

American Legion Post 799

American Legion Post 799 holds thier monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Prairie Township Fire Station, 123 Inah Ave. The Post is actively focusing on fund raising activities for the remainder of 2008 and support is needed.

Fall Bazaar at St. Paul

Senior luncheon

There will be a senior luncheon on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at noon at Westgate United Methodist Church, 61 S. Powell Ave.  Jonelle Oman will be the guest speaker and will share about Prescription Access Network available to seniors. Programs are available that could possible lower costs for some prescriptions. The luncheon is open to the public, donations will be accepted.
