Paper recycling at Parkview
Parkview United Methodist Church, 344 S. Algonquin Ave., is providing the community with recycling bins for paper products. Bring newspapers, magazines, junk mail, etc., to the green and yellow bins in the church parking lot. No cardboard or phone books will be accepted.
Exercise for seniors
Seniors are invited to exercise on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 55 Pasadena Ave. Men and women aged 50 to 90 and up have exercised at the facility since 2001. The instructor leads each session with warm-ups, play balls, resistance bands, hand weights, some low-impact aerobics and balance activities. Each participant can adapt the routine to his/her comfort level. The cost is $35 for each eight-week session. Call the instructor, Lori Vazquez, at 989-4595 with questions.
VFW Post 6065
VFW Post 6065 will hold their meetings on the third Thursday of each month at 5 p.m. Meetings last about one hour and are held at the Prairie Township Senior Center, 4656 West Broad St. Those interested in getting involved or volunteering time should attend a meeting. The Ladies Auxiliary meets at 6:30 p.m. The motivations of the VFW are patriotic, historical, and educational. Golden Age Center
The Salvation Army Golden Age Center, 2300 W. Mound St., invites anyone aged 60 or over to attend on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., for lunch, crafts, movies, BINGO, games, health and fitness, and fun. Columbus hydrant flushing
Beginning April 29, The Columbus Division of Fire will begin their annual three-month program to flush the city’s 24,000 fire hydrants, said Fire Chief Ned Pettus, Jr.
This year, hydrant flushing will be conducted in two phases. The Westside will be included in phase two, which will take place June 11 through July 22.
Hydrant flushings will be performed seven days a week, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Water could become cloudy or rusty during the flushing process, particularly in older neighborhoods. This condition is not a health hazard, and should clear up within 24-hours. However, residents in flushing areas should check their water before doing laundry because discolored water could stain laundered clothing.
Residents can call the Columbus Division of Fire’s Hydrant Hot Line at 645-4055 to obtain daily updates listing specific Columbus neighborhoods to be flushed. The hot line will be updated at 9 a.m. each day throughout the three-month hydrant maintenance program.
The city’s hydrants are flushed annually to test their performance and correct any problems that might interfere with their operation.

CCS kindergarten roundup
If you have a child who will be five years-old on or before September 30 and you live inside the Columbus City Schools district, now is the time to enroll for full-day kindergarten for the upcoming 2008-09 school year.
By registering early your child will have the opportunity to visit their new school and meet the principal before school starts. Parents will also receive valuable information about how to further prepare their child for kindergarten and what to expect. West Broad kindergarten roundup
West Broad Elementary will host parents of incoming kindergartners for the 2008-2009 school year on May 21 from 12:45-1:45 p.m. Register for kindergarten and see a typical kindergarten experience, and meet the staff. Those unable to attend should register between April 23 and May 30. Each parent will receive helpful information for kindergarten success and each student will receive a gift. To register, parents will need to provide the child’s birth certificate, immunization record, social security number and address verification.
CLC Information Session

Bowling for charity
Saxton Real Estate is sponsoring a Bowling for Relay for Life event, for all proceeds to benefit the American Cancer Society. The event will be held at Western Lanes, 500 Georgesville Road, on June 7, from 6-8:30 p.m. Cost is $20 for adults and $9 for each child, and includes, pizza, soda and a maximum of three games of bowling. LVRA spring cleanup
The Lincoln Village Residence Association Neighborhood Partnership Safe and Clean Project will host its third spring cleanup on June 7. Those interested in volunteering their time should meet at the Prairie Township Senior Center, 4616 West Broad St., at 9 a.m. The project for the day will be Lincoln Village Plaza.

A Home of Your Own
Homes on the Hill CDC will hold the homebuyer education course, “A Home of Your Own,” geared toward first-time homebuyers, at the HOTH hoffices, 12 S. Terrace Ave., on June 2, 9, and 16, from 6 to 9 p.m. The course is open to the public and free of charge. The workshop will cover topics ranging from financial literacy, credit and mortgage loans to how to choose a realtor, home inspections, and the closing process. Guest speakers will include area professionals in the fields of lending, real estate, and housing. This workshop may be a requirement for some down payment assistance programs and first time homebuyer loan programs.

HOTH is a HUD approved housing counseling agency providing certified training in pre-purchase, post-purchase, and foreclosure counseling for homebuyers.
WUMC senior luncheon
There will be a senior luncheon on Tuesday, June 10 at 12 noon at Westgate United Methodist Church, 61 South POwell Ave. This event is open to the public, donations will be accepted. There will be no senior luncheons in July or August – they will resume Sept. 9.
BRHS summer sports camps
Bishop Ready High School has announced a series of sports camps scheduled this summer for middle school and high school students. Camps are open to all qualifying students.
Boys Basketball Camp for incoming 9th graders is scheduled for June 10-12 from 5:30-8 p.m.; camp for 5th and 6th graders is scheduled for June 16-19 from 8:30 a.m. to noon and camp for students in grades 7 and 8 is scheduled for June 23-26 from 8:30 a.m. to noon
Baseball Camp is scheduled for June 16-19, 1:30-3:30 p.m., and is open to boys and girls ages 7-14.
Football Camp for students in grades 5 through 8 will be held June 16-19 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.; for incoming freshmen, the camp will be held from July 14-18, time to be announced.
Volleyball Camp is June 17-19 in two sessions: for students in grades 4-6 the sessions are daily from 3-5 p.m.; for students in grades 7 and 8, the sessions run daily from 5:30-8 p.m. An Advanced Camp under the direction of Muskingum Head Coach Bea Zicha runs June 30, and July 1-3 from 9 a.m. to noon and is for students in grades 9-12.
Girls Basketball Camp will run in two sessions: for students in grades 4 and 5, camp will be held July 14-17 from 8:30 a.m. to noon; for students in grades 6-8, sessions will be held July 21-24 from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

GUMC indoor yard sale
The Glenwood United Methodist Women will be holding their annual indoor yard sale on Saturday, June 7, in the fellowship hall of the church, 2833 Valleyview Dr., on the corner of Hague and Valleyview. There will also be a bake sale and lunch food available. Doors will be open from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Free clothing and lunch

Stewart to host town meeting
State Representative Dan Stewart is hosting his 30th public forum/town hall meeting on June 3, from 6-8 p.m. at West High School, 179 S. Powell Ave. Lt. Gov. Fisher will also speak at the meeting. Benefit gospel singing
Hilltop Community Full Gospel Church, 179 N. Huron Ave., will host a benefit gospel sing on June 28 at 6 p.m. The featured group will be “The Willing Vessels.” Several local singers will also perform. Women’s bible study
Cypress Wesleyan Church will host Summer Drop-In Women’s Bible Study. Classes are offered on Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. or 7 p.m. in the Cypress Café. No registration necessary, no workbooks needed, no fees to pay. Childcare is not provided for Summer Drop-In Studies. The first class is “The Greatest of These is Love,” from Beth Moore’s “Living Beyond Yourself” on June 12. Westland Senior Citizens
The Westland Senior Citizens will meet June 12 at Columbia Heights United Methodist Church, 775 Galloway Road. The meeting will begin at 11 a.m. Speaker will be Detective Thad Alexander of the Columbus Division of Police Anti-Gang Unit. A potluck lunch will be served at noon with euchre to follow. WABA parade June 28
The Westland Area Independence Day Parade and Celebration is scheduled for Saturday, June 28. The parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will include local high school bands. The theme this year is “Star Spangled Fun!” Awards will be given in several categories for parade floats. There will also be “Kids Street” games and activities at Lincoln Village Plaza after the parade. Benefit bass tournament
Westside resident Kelley Anderson, wife of Sgt. Todd Anderson with the Columbus Division of Police, was a terminal cancer patient who passed away May 26. She became ill while on a trip to Florida and needed the services of an ambulance to return to Columbus. The cost of her transport was not covered by insurance. To offset the medical expenses, a benefit is being held in her honor. The “Kelley Anderson Benefit Open Bass Tournament” is being held June 28 at the east ramp of Deer Creek Reservoir. The entry fee is $65 per team. Cash prizes and plaques will be awarded to first, second and third place teams. Check in and boat inspection will begin at 5:30 a.m. and is to be completed by 6:15 a.m. Entries will be accepted at the ramp on the morning of the tournament.
