Another festival is returning to the summer lineup after a year off due to the pandemic.
West Jefferson’s July 4th Streetfest is scheduled for July 2-4. Rides, food, entertainment, craft vendors, a parade, and fireworks are planned. The activities will take place on South Center and Pearl streets, as is tradition. On May 5, the Jefferson Township trustees gave festival organizers permission to move the fireworks launch site back to Hampton Cemetery.
Last year, the streetfest was cancelled. The fireworks were held, but they were launched from Converse Park and residents were encouraged to watch them from their homes–all part of safety considerations to prevent large gatherings and the spread of COVID-19.
With the move back to Hampton Cemetery this year, festival visitors will be able to watch the fireworks display from Garrette Park. The cemetery launch site also allows the show to include larger shells. At Converse Park, the fireworks company had to limit the size of shells it shot off due to the location.
“We’re excited. This year, we are pretty much back to normal, as much as we can,” said festival organizer Bob Harper, adding that plans are subject to change based on the pandemic-related safety restrictions in place at the time of the festival.
The basic festival schedule is as follows:
July 2–Festival opens at 5 p.m.;
July 3–Parade lineup at 10 a.m., parade at 11 a.m., festival opens at 1 p.m.;
July 4–Festival opens at 1 p.m.; fireworks at 10 p.m.
Parade participants are asked to decorate according to a patriotic theme. Parade entry forms are available at the West Jefferson village water department and Mike’s Pizza. At this time, state guidelines prohibit the throwing of candy along the parade route.
Once again, the Streetfest Committee is selling tickets for a cash drawing to be held at the festival. Tickets can be purchased now from any committee member or at West Jefferson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7005, 56 N. Walnut St.
On May 3, West Jefferson village council approved a donation of $4,000 to the festival committee to help defray costs. The village has been making the donation annually for years.
Organizers welcome additional donations to help cover expenses. Checks can be made out to “West Jefferson July 4th Streetfest Inc.” and mailed to 880 Crescent Dr., West Jefferson OH 43162.
