West Jefferson will be home to urgent care center

This fall, Madison County Hospital will open the county’s first urgent care center.

The facility will be located at 487 W. Main St. in West Jefferson, in the same building where primary care physician Dr.

Kathleen Vennekotter and cardiologist  Dr. Vinay Chitkara have offices. Both doctors are affiliated with the hospital.

"Hospital administrators have been aware for a long time of the need for an urgent care in the community," said Mona Flax, Madison County Hospital’s administrative director of marketing and development. "With a center located in the county, people will no longer need to drive to Columbus for after-hours care."

The hospital is locating the center in West Jefferson not only to give Madison County residents a resource closer to home, but also to compete with surrounding service providers.

"There’s a whole market in West Jefferson that’s on the service line edge; they can go to Columbus or they can go to Madison County," Flax said. "This is another option for Madison County Hospital to provide services to the people in West Jefferson."

The Urgent Care Center at West Jefferson will be open from 3 to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The exact opening date will be announced at a later time.

The hours of operation are designed to give people a place to go when they cannot get to their family doctors. The urgent care team will treat urgent medical conditions that don’t require a trip to the emergency department, such as flu-like symptoms, earaches, minor cuts, skin rashes and sore throats.

Premier Health Care Services, the same group that staffs the hospital’s emergency department, will staff the urgent care. Jennifer Piccione, R.N., the hospital’s director of emergency services, is director of the urgent care program.

Organizers are still in the process of establishing fees for the facility’s services.

"Typically, an urgent care visit costs less than going to the emergency department," Flax said. "Some visits and services may be covered by a patient’s health care plan. Discounts will be available for self-pay patients."
