Food trucks are coming to West Jefferson in 2021.
On Jan. 18, village council approved an ordinance allowing food trucks to operate in the village. A summer schedule is in the works.

“We would like to encourage food trucks to come out once a month (and) maybe have some activities specifically focused on the trucks,” said Mayor Ray Martin.

The village does not intend for food trucks to be a daily occurrence, he added.

Under the new ordinance, those who wish to operate a food truck must acquire a mobile food license from Madison County Public Health and a permit from West Jefferson’s director of public safety.

Food trucks cannot operate between midnight and 6 a.m. They cannot operate within 100 feet of an existing, fixed location food service establishment, such as a bakery or restaurant, or within 500 feet of any kindergarten through 12th grade school one hour before school starts through one hour after school ends.

To minimize disturbance, food trucks cannot play music, repetitive sounds or announcements from their vehicle. They must provide trash cans for customers and clean up trash when they move their vehicle. They must obey all traffic laws.

In other news, the village extended the Families First Coronavirus Response Act to March 31, 2021. The act uses Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act funding to pay government employees if they test positive for COVID-19 or if they are quarantined by Madison County Public Health.

The act does not cover police officers as they are critical personnel, Martin said.

If police officers are issued a quarantine, they must still go to work, but the village monitors their temperature and symptoms daily and keeps them away from the public as possible. If an officer tests positive for COVID-19, they may quarantine with pay.

The act was first passed in March 2020.
