The West Jefferson July 4th Streetfest Committee could use some help in the form of more volunteers.

Every year, the all-volunteer group puts on a three-day festival and celebration, complete with a parade, live music, rides, food vendors, fireworks, and more. To do that, they need manpower.

“We really need help. We are getting older and need young blood,” said Bob Harper Jr., a Streetfest Committee member.

This year’s festival is set for July 2-4. Two of the attractions with the biggest need for volunteers are the dunk tank and the shaved ice trailer, both of which serve as fundraisers for the committee.

The group needs someone to contact Jefferson Local Schools to make arrangements for football players and cheerleaders to sit in the dunk tank. That person needs to schedule the times the students will help, as well as recruit and schedule additional helpers to collect money and chase the balls at the tank during the festival. The committee needs at least two volunteers working in the shaved ice trailer at any given time over the course of the festival.

Other volunteer opportunities include manning the committee’s headquarters tent at the festival to answer visitors’ questions. On the day of the parade, approximately 10 people are needed, spread out across three staging areas, to coordinate parade entrants. It’s also possible the committee will need volunteers to help with trash pickup the mornings of July 3-5. While food vendor coordination is covered for this year, Harper said the group will need a new coordinator next year and invites anyone who is interested to learn the ropes this year.

Anyone who is interested in volunteering for any position at the festival can contact Harper at (614) 879-8840. The committee meets at 7 p.m. the next to last Thursday of each month at Mike’s Pizza, 50 W. Town St. The next meeting is tonight (April 18). Next month’s meeting is May 23.
