Cars, motorcycles, street rods, hot rods, trucks, and choppers will be the name of the game Aug. 18.

The Madison County Chamber of Commerce and West Jefferson Business Council are sponsoring their first Madison Classic Cars & Crafts Show from noon to 8 p.m. in downtown West Jefferson.

Dash plaques will go to the first 200 entrants. Winner plaques will go to the top 20 finishers in each category. The overall top three winners will receive trophies handpainted, fired, and chrome-trimmed by Cheri Mullins of Cheri’s Art Studio in West Jefferson.

The entry fee for cars and cycles is $10 per vehicle. Registration will take place at McDonald’s Restaurant on the east side of town. Vehicle staging will begin along Pearl Street, from Pat’s Video to Merit Bank. Other parking lots in the village will be utilized for overflow.

Sean Hughes, director of the Madison County Chamber of Commerce, said he expects a great turnout as he been contacted by many car and motorcycle clubs from around Ohio since event planning started three months ago.

Motorized vehicles won’t be the only draw, however, as the event also will feature craft booths, a swap meet, raffles, a cornhole tournament and food offered by local restaurants.

Merchant, craft and swap booth areas are available at $20 for a 12×12-foot space and $40 for a 12×24-foot space.

Diane Durller, membership service and event planner for the Chamber, said the downtown business community will sponsor a unique scavenger hunt.

“We have 13 businesses involved so far with hopefully more joining in,” Durller said. “Participants will be given a card with the name of the participating businesses, and they will collect the specially named items from those businesses, get their card punched, and move on to the next item on their list.”

West Jefferson Village Council’s special events committee will hold a business appreciation cookout at Garrette Park. Council President Darlene Steele said local business owners will receive invitations to the luncheon, which will begin at 11 a.m. Each businessman or business owner attending will receive a certificate of appreciation and a free meal. The menu will include hot dogs, hamburgers, salad, baked beans and cold drinks.

The Posse band will provide live music.

“This is entirely a locally sponsored event with local vendors and local businesses,’’ Hughes said, noting that no outside food vendors will be involved.

West Jefferson Business Council members hope the Aug. 18 event will be a springboard to make the Madison Classic Cars & Craft Show an annual event in West Jefferson.

“This encourages people from outside our community to come into the downtown area of West Jefferson and see what all we have to offer here,” Hughes said.
