West Jeff advances in the playoffs

The West Jefferson High School football team traveled to Newcomerstown on Oct. 28 to play in the first round of OHSAA Div. VI Region 23 playoff action. The Roughriders won the game 49-14 to advance to the second round. They will play Coal Grove on Nov. 4.

West Jefferson’s defense played a great game in holding Newcomerstown to 14 points and 167 yards total offense. Luke Taylor led the defense with 11 tackles on the night.
West Jefferson quarterback Austin Buescher, back in action after a mid-season injury, led the Roughrider offense with 21 completions on 33 attempts and 276 yards with four touchdown passes. He also scored on a 1-yard run.
Senior Ben Ryan kicks the extra point from the hold of Owen Warner. Ryan kicked seven points after touchdown on the night.
West Jefferson receiver Mason Book fights for extra yards after a pass reception against the Trojans. Book led the Riders with five receptions for 98 yards and one touchdown. He added an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the second quarter.
Running back Tanner Salyer leaps for the goal line for a rushing touchdown. Salyer rushed for 48 yards on seven attempts and tallied seven receptions for 84 yards.
