Candidates for West Jefferson Village Council At-Large
(Three seats up for election)

Michael Conway
54 N. Franklin St., West Jefferson

Occupation: Owner/operator, The X-Terminator, pest control and wildlife removal

Previous service in public office: One term (four years) on village council

Education/military experience: B.S. from University of Michigan

Community activities/honors: Former youth athletic basketball coach, travel basketball team coach, volunteer at Ox Roast slicing meat.

Goals if elected: Continue what this council has been working on over my term. Continually improving infrastructure of village, steady growth of village commerce. Improve our parks with new equipment and make handicap/special needs accessible. This council has been very good at working together, without one individual agenda, to improve and grow the community.

James D. Graham
190 Smith St., West Jefferson

Occupation: Retired from NAPA Auto Parts and Broadridge Financial Solutions

Previous service in public office: Not yet

Education/military experience: Bishop Ready High School

Community activities/honors: Volunteer at Voicecorps and Madison County Board of Elections

Goals if elected: Council does a fine job when it comes to administration. Its biggest challenge is with communication. The construction projects that affect the residents here, for example, should be posted on its underused web page. As people and families plan their day, they need to be alerted when their water or electricity will be shut off or their street closed. I would like to see better communication given from the village to the villagers. Speaking as a resident, relying on social media for information is uncomfortable at best.

Richard King
852 Kirkwood Dr., West Jefferson

Occupation: Electrical contractor, self-employed

Previous service in public office: I have served on West Jefferson’s Charter Review Board and am currently in my third year as vice chairman on West Jefferson’s Zoning Board.

Education/military experience: High school diploma and continued annual electrical education classes.

Community activities/honors: I started my community involvement as a WJYAA soccer coach for four seasons. After my last season with the youth association, I continued as an assistant coach for the West Jefferson Middle School soccer team for three seasons. Then some of my time and electrical knowledge was volunteered towards our town’s famous Christmas in the Park. I have also volunteered my time for set-up, clean-up, and ticket booth for Christmas in the Park and the 4th of July Street Fest. I am a member of our local Quinlan karate dojo, where I have participated in the dojo’s performances for the nursing home, parades and pool.

Goals if elected: I would like to work with current and new officials in the process to revitalize our parks. We have four parks in our town for our children that will not serve their purpose unless we can ensure a safe and enriching area for them to grow and play. My focus will also be on the subject of growth in our community. Growth in our community is approaching in an inevitable manner. I would like to be involved in ensuring this is smart growth for our community. When discussing growth, I would like to be involved in the planning of future developments to ensure our community still has open space, businesses can thrive, and our community members can still reach their daily destinations on walkable sidewalks in the main streets in our community. My goal is to approach growth as an investment into our local community.

Jeffery B. Patterson
523 Brookdale Dr., West Jefferson

Occupation: Assistant football coach at Jefferson Local Schools. Machine operator and lead supervisor at Krazy Glue

Previous service in public office: Not applicable

Education/military experience: West Jefferson High School graduate

Community activities/honors: WJYAA volunteer basketball coach, member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7005 in West Jefferson

Goals if elected: There is a list of many things I would love to see improved in our community, such as an updated swimming pool, continual improvement in our parks, sidewalks, etc. One of the main reasons I am running for council is to be a voice for the people.
