Two local grapplers place at state

Five wrestlers from Madison County competed at the 82nd Annual State Wrestling Individual Tournament held March 7-9 at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus. Two made it to the podium, placing in the top eight in their respective weight classes–Antwaun Burns of London, fourth in the Div. II 138-pound class, and Hunter Braithwaite of West Jefferson, seventh in the Div. III 220-pound class.

London freshman Antwaun Burns (top) took fourth place in the Div. II 138-pound weight class. Burns started the tourney with an 8-3 win over Tiffin Columbian senior Caden Blust (shown here). In his second match, he claimed a 3-2 victory over Akron St. Vincent St. Mary senior Hunter Olson. The road got tougher in the championship semifinals, where he fell to top seed and eventual champion, Alek Martin of St. Paris Graham. Burns went on to take another victory over Blust but fell in his final match to Steubenville senior Jacson Mulgrew. He finished the season with a record of 43-6.

West Jefferson senior Hunter Braithwaite (right) closed out the state tournament and his high school career on a winning note. Here, he wrestles his way to an 8-3 win over senior Nick Baker of Troy Christian to take seventh place in Div. III 220-pound class. This was Braithwaite’s second trip to state. He finished the season with a 47-7 record.

Senior Josh Colvin of London got off to a great start at state, claiming a sudden death victory over Monroe senior Sam Price by a score of 4-2. That would be the only win for the 152-pound senior who finished the season with a 47-11. Colvin wrestled at state as an alternate.

Joey Buckland (top), a West Jefferson senior, takes an 8-1 win over Carlisle junior Justin Richie in the Div. III 126-pound class. Buckland finished the season with a 48-7 record.
