Demolition of the former school building on Walnut Street in London started Jan. 31.

Demolition began Jan. 31 on the former school building and gym that served for many years as London’s Community Center and the hub of the city’s indoor youth sports programs. Once those structures, plus the old boiler room, are completely demolished, crews from Excavating of Ohio will separate the debris by material, remove the debris, and backfill the site.

A large piece of metal from the roof is moved aside after a section of the roof came tumbling down.

The city will be setting aside some of the building’s bricks for residents to take as keepsakes. Information about when and where the bricks will be available will be posted to the city’s website and social media pages.

A chalkboard, lockers, and lights are visible inside a classroom and hallway during demolition.

London Mayor Patrick Closser said the demolition work should be complete by sometime in April.
