Upon learning his beloved girlfriend of five years is coming to see him, struggling musician Peter Bretter (Jason Segal) finally gets off the couch, puts away his obscenely large bowl of cereal, cleans his place and takes a shower.
Peter sees his girlfriend Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell) but she tells him, she wants to break up. Then he decides to "Forget Sarah Marshall." Only problem is – he can’t.
The reasons for the break up are not because she is busy working on her semi-hit television show Crime Scene: Scene of the Crime, or because of his wanting to do a Dracula musical with puppets, but because she found someone else.
The next three weeks of his life consist of crying after one-night stands, drinking, burning photos of her and more crying.
Having enough of his moping behavior, his stepbrother (Bill Hader) tells him to go to beautiful Hawaii to start the healing process.
But how much can you heal when you find your ex staying at the same hotel room with her current flame, the one she dumped you for?
I loved Sarah’s new boyfriend Aldous Snow (Russell Brand), lead singer of the British rock band Infant Sorrow. When his music video was playing, after the dumping scene, I though he would be that character who is supposed to be funny, but ends up being extremely annoying. Much to my surprise, his character completely stole the show.
It wasn’t the real life situations (like calling when you shouldn’t, checking out what they are doing and general pining) that go along with breakups, or how even how amusing "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" was, it was Brand’s portrayal.
His serenade to Sarah was hysterical. If you see it, you’ll know which one I’m talking about.
I think some could be off-put by the vulgar humor, but it really isn’t that bad. I’ve heard worse in high school.
If you’re easily offended by that type of humor, this movie probably isn’t for you. There is not an excess of it, but it is there (this is a Judd Apatow production, after all).
Despite that, I will go ahead and say "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" is one of the funniest movies I have seen in a long time. The movie also gets bonus points in the grading because they showed the trailer for "The Dark Knight." So cannot wait for that movie to come out. That was worth the price of admission alone.
I gave this film a B+.
