A musical “British Invasion” is coming to Groveport.
The Groveport Madison Area Community Choir’s (GMACC) next production, “The British Are Coming: A Musical Variety Show,” will be held at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Feb. 24 at Groveport Madison High School, 4475 S. Hamilton Road.
According to GMACC Director Terri Christensen, “Every year we try to make the show different and this year was no exception. The British Invasion (of the 1960s) had a huge impact on music around the world and we wanted to bring that to the stage.”
She said the GMACC members will perform lots of Beatles music as well as songs by Elton John, The Hollies, The Rolling Stones and Queen.
“We will feature artists from Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Canada and Australia,” said Christensen. “The show will also have a scene with folk songs including, ‘Danny Boy.’”
Highlights of the show this year will be the many special costumes and set pieces.
“This year our set pieces are being built by the construction trades class at Groveport Madison High School and their instructor Chad Gibbs,” said Christensen. “It’s a great learning experience for the kids and helps us out tremendously. Our finale will be, ‘He Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother,’ which should be a big number! It’s going to be amazing!”
Other highlights include appearances from such British characters as Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, Mary Poppins, and more. Plus, the entire evening involves a chase to find the elusive “Waldo,” from the cartoon “Where’s Waldo” which originated in England
The GMACC has grown over the years and now has 78 adults members in the choir and 14 kids, who come from all over central Ohio.
“There are also countless volunteers that help out backstage and behind the scenes.,” said Christensen. “It takes over 125 to pull everything together and bring it to the stage and all of our help and members are volunteers, from the director right down to the guy that pulls the curtains. We have folks from Groveport, Canal Winchester, Reynoldsburg, Circleville, Gahanna, and Delaware and more. Over 25 of our members are graduates of Groveport Madison High School and I think they just love giving back to this community.”
Christensen said she hopes the GMACC has a positive influence in the community.
“It was my hope, when starting this, that it would bring people together and raise money for local charities,” said Christensen. “It has gone so far beyond that and in my wildest dreams I never imagined the impact it would have on our members and our community. We are a family – pure and simple. We love each other, pray for each other, care for each other and the list goes on. And we do it all to bring hope and help to the community we love.”
