The annual Ohio Area IV Envirothon was held at the Gwynne Conservation Area on the Farm Science Review grounds in London on April 30. Approximately 60 high school teams from across the region participated in the outdoor, academic, and environmental competition.

The competition tests students’ knowledge in aquatic ecology, current environmental issues, forestry, soil, and wildlife. Local participants included two teams from Madison-Plains High School, three teams from Tolles Career & Technical Center, and three teams from West Jefferson High School.

West Jefferson Team 1 took first place. Team members included Mathew Chmil, Brent Gardner, Charlie Kitchen, Charles Stephens, and Katey Stephens. Chmil, Gardner, and Charles Stephens also were on the winning team in 2023.

This year’s top four teams qualified for the state competition which will take place at Hocking College in June. Two teams from Sycamore High School (Montgomery County) and one team from Beavercreek High School (Dayton) joined West Jefferson Team 1 as state qualifiers.

The Madison and Fayette Soil and Water Conservation Districts hosted the Area IV contest.
