Suspicious package at Groveport Recreation Center

Groveport Police and the Madison Township Fire Department responded to a call about a suspicious package at the Groveport Recreation Center, 7370 Groveport Road, on Jan. 17.

According to Groveport Police Chief Ralph Portier, the recreation center was evacuated as a precaution until the package was cleared. The recreation center was closed for two hours.

Portier said the Columbus Fire Department Bomb Squad determined the package was safe after locating a plastic bag containing a t-shirt and an anti-theft device.

“It appears someone had stolen an item from Wal-Mart with the anti-theft device on it then tossed the plastic shopping bag at the recreation center,” said Portier, who added the police would have no further comment.
