When Kayla Davis founded the non-profit organization A Step in the Right Direction in 2019, the westside native said it was created with multiple missions in mind. Its primary mission was to help the homeless and formerly incarcerated transition back into the community and find employment, while its secondary mission focused on giving back to the community where she grew up. Last year, the organization hosted a back-to-school backpack giveaway where they donated 175 backpacks to area children and this year they hosted the first Summer Bash, sponsored by CareSource to offer children and their families food, fun and entertainment within their neighborhood.
