State Senator Steve Stivers (R-Columbus) has announced his candidacy for the 15th Ohio Congressional District serving part of Franklin County, Madison and Union counties.

“We need real change in Washington – there’s too much partisanship, too much bickering and not enough work getting accomplished,” Stivers said in a press release. “With the recent proposed $3.5 trillion tax increase, it’s clear we need people who believe in more fiscal discipline and less taxes. It’s also clear that we need dedicated public servants and true representation in Congress. I’m committed to serving my constituents, my state and my country and I want to be a part of the change that is so desperately needed.”

A lieutenant colonel in the Ohio Army National Guard, Stivers served the nation oversees for nearly a year in Operation Iraqi Freedom in Kuwait, Iraq, Qatar and Djibouti. Stivers plans to draw on his 22 years of experience as a soldier and his time as a battalion commander as he focuses on important issues including homeland security, terrorism and national defense.

“When called to duty in the Middle East, I answered the call,” Stivers said. “Now, residents of central Ohio, my party and my nation are calling me to service – this time as a member of the United States House of Representatives. I”m honored to take on this battle and I look forward to the opportunity to serve.”

Stivers is currently the state senator for the 16th Ohio Senate District. In the Ohio Senate, Stivers has worked to pass legislation that protects Ohio’s children, lowers taxes, makes college more affordable, improves the business climate and institutes fiscal discipline. Recently, he worked with his colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass a fiscally conservative, balanced budget for the state of Ohio.

“Things like that don’t happen in Washington,” Stivers said. “We need to be a government of ‘promises made, promises kept’ – that’s what I’ve been about my whole life, whether in the military, with my family or in the legislature, and that’s what I’ll bring to the job in Congress.”

A graduate of The Ohio State University, Stivers holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and international relations and a master’s degree in business administration. Stivers and his fiancé Karen Tabor will be married later this month.
