Southeastern’s golf team includes: (front row, from left) Zachary Grove, Travis Cain, Jordan Hitt, Shawn Jackson, Travis Rodgers, Jacob Fent; (back row) Matt Sidner, A.J. Huggins, J.P. McFarland, Hunter Mickens, Daniel Black and Coach P.J. Bartemes.

In 2006, Southeastern’s golf team finished third in the Ohio Heritage Conference (OHC) tournament. Second-year head coach P.J. Bertemes is hoping for a similar season-ender in 2007.

“We would like to get better as a team as the season progresses and hopefully have another strong showing at our league tournament,” he said.

The squad charged with this responsibility has 11 players, six of whom are returning letter winners and five of whom are freshmen.

“We currently have seven golfers that can and will play one of the top six spots each match. This leads to some good, healthy competition within our team,” Bertemes said.

Southeastern’s lone senior, Matt Sidner, is the team’s No. 1 golfer. He is expected not only to provide team leadership on the course but also achieve consistency in his individual game. Last year, he averaged a score of 47.3.

Two sophomores have taken up residence in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots for Southeastern.

They are J.P. McFarland, who averaged 50.3 in 2006, and Travis Cain, who averaged 51.4.

A freshman, Travis Rodgers, has nabbed the fourth spot, while juniors Daniel Black and A.J. Huggins and sophomore Hunter Mickens are rotating at the fifth- and sixth-man positions.

Bertemes’ assessment of this year’s schedule puts Northeastern, West Liberty-Salem and Triad as the teams that will wreak the most havoc in terms of competition on the links.

As for the match to which he most looks forward, Bertemes said, “I enjoy the OHC tournament at the end of the year. It is a neat experience for all the kids in the league to come together and compete.”
