In his first year as Southeastern’s golf coach, Mike Parker is working with a relatively young team that shows promise for the years to come.
“The six currently playing varsity consist of one senior, two juniors, two sophomores and one freshman,” he said. “There is a good blend of experience and inexperience, but as a team we are pretty inconsistent because of those same factors.”
He looks forward to watching the players improve as the season progresses.
“We will have a lot coming back next fall, so the growth we have throughout this year will benefit the program not just this year, but especially next year,” Parker said.
Parker said the team hasn’t settled into a lineup that can easily define certain players as No. 1, No. 6 or anywhere in between. As it stands now, the varsity team includes five returning players: senior Dan Black, juniors Travis Cain and J.P. McFarland, and sophomores Jacob Fent and Travis Rodgers. The squad’s sixth man is freshman Tyler Carper.
“A couple of JV players continue to compete for a varsity spot and could easily end up playing varsity by the end of the year,” said Parker, who is pleased with the overall number of golfers he has out this year.
The JV team includes Jordan Hitt, Josh Hixon, Nate Knox, Jeff Leonhard, Shawn Jackson, Josh Jarvis and Max Wildman.
“Team goals are to improve throughout the year as individuals, and subsequently as a team win the OHC (Ohio Heritage Conference),” Parker said. “I look forward to… seeing where we can end up by the end of the season.”
Parker replaces P.J. Bertemes, who coached Southeastern’s golf team for two years.
