A family walk was slated for the morning of July 23 to dedicate a new sidewalk in West Jefferson.

The sidewalk runs from West Jefferson’s high school and middle school to Hurt- Battelle Memorial Library and was constructed early this summer after school was out.

Mayor Ray Martin has championed this project since long before he was elected to council and then as mayor.

The project cost was $5,000, much of which donations covered. Also helping to finance the project was the sale of books written by the late Mike Harden, a West Jefferson native who was a long-time writer for the Columbus Dispatch.  Donations also came from the Murray family across whose property the sidewalk runs.

Martin sought construction of the sidewalk so that children would have a safe route between the schools and library. He said he also would like to see sidewalks installed to the parks to make the village more walkable.

The July 23 family walk was slated to start at 10:30 a.m. at the high school and proceed to the library. Parents were encouraged to participate in the walk with their children.
