A shooting incident took place near the Groveport Recreation Center at the intersection of Richardson Road and Betz Way around 3:18 a.m. on Sept. 10.

According to Groveport Police Sgt. Brian Thompson, a Groveport police officer approached a stopped vehicle when a shooting took place between a male and female.

“The officer engaged the subject by firing his weapon,” said Thompson. “The male subject ran to the corn field and was found later and pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Detectives are still investigating to determine cause of death.”

Thompson said the female was transported by paramedics to Grant Hospital with gunshot wounds. Her condition is unknown.

The officer was not injured.

The reason for the shots being fired is still under investigation, according to Thompson.

“We are not looking for any other individuals,” said Thompson. “The case is still under investigation to determine role of the male and female. Many details cannot be released because it is still under investigation.”

The name of the officer is not being released yet. He is on administrative leave, which is standard procedure for this type of incident, according to Thompson.
