Shadows of the past in CW

A shadow of the sign lettering of a former Sunoco gas station can faintly be seen on the front of this building at 20 S. High St. in Canal Winchester. The building is being renovated to become a Johnson’s Real Ice Cream shop.

The remodeling of a building on South High Street in historic downtown Canal Winchester has revealed a bit of history.

According to city of Canal Winchester Development Director Lucas Haire, the building, located at 20 S. High St. is currently being remodeled for a new location for Johnson’s Real Ice Cream.

“They are hoping to be open by June,” said Haire.

Haire said the building was built in 1950. It operated as a gas station until the early 1970s.

It was remodeled to an office use in 1973 and operated as an optometrist office for 50 years.

Recent remodeling efforts have revealed a shadowy outline of the lettering of the former gas station’s name, “Sunoco.”

“The city of Canal Winchester bought the building with a goal of repositioning the building to a retail of restaurant use to enhance the Old Town area,” said Haire. “We have leased the space to the Canal Winchester Industry and Commerce Corporation, the city’s CIC to remodeled the exterior and find an appropriate tenant.
