The village of West Jefferson needs to fill a forthcoming vacancy on council.
Ray Martin is resigning from his seat on council to assume the role of mayor. He was elected as mayor in the November election and takes office in January. Two years remain on his Ward 2 council term.
Council needs to appoint someone to fill the vacancy. Candidates must be qualified electors who have lived in West Jefferson’s Ward 2 for at least the past year. Interested individuals must submit resumés or letters of interest by Dec. 12 to: Clerk of Council, 28 E. Main St., West Jefferson, OH 43162.
“We will interview all of the applicants the following week (the week of Dec. 14). We hope to make the appointment by our Dec. 21 meeting,” said Ron Garver, council president.
The appointee will officially take office on Jan. 2. Council has yet to determine if that individual will serve until the next general election in November 2016 or for the full two years remaining on the term through the end of 2017.
“We’re checking our charter and might have to get an opinion from our law director,” said Jack Herrel, clerk of council.
