School bus catches fire

Groveport Madison school bus #49 caught fire while traveling on Pontius Road just north of Hayes Road around 3:20 p.m. on May 9 while transporting students from Groveport Madison Middle School Central. According to Groveport Police Sgt. Josh Guiler, the fire started near the rear tires of the bus. “Thankfully, all students were evacuated safely and there were no injuries,” said Groveport Madison Schools Communications Director Ty Debevoise. “Students were placed on a new bus and continued home.” Madison Township firefighters from Station 181 responded and put out the fire. Groveport Police believe the cause of the fire was a mechanical problem. Debevoise said the bus is being examined and the cause of the fire is being investigated. According to school officials, Bus #49 was four years old and had 70,000 miles on it.
