Scholarship dinner set for Nov. 8

Janice Streit

Janice Streit was dedicated to her job as an educator. That’s why her family is dedicating proceeds from an upcoming night of food and entertainment to a scholarship fund in her name.

The event will take place on Nov. 8 at Brennan Loft, 158 S. Main St., London. The doors open at 6:15 p.m. followed by dinner at 7. The menu includes mixed salad, baked steak, chicken cordon bleu, au gratin potatoes, California mixed vegetables, assorted desserts, and ice cream. Mr. and Mrs. Brian Potts and Cierra Mathys will provide musical entertainment.

Tickets are $50 each. Reservations may be made by calling Rick Streit at 740-852-5465 by Oct. 31. Seating is limited. All proceeds will go to the Janice Holland Streit Scholarship Fund.

A native of Madison County, Janice graduated from Madison South High School in 1971. She earned several degrees in education, which she put to work over her 32 years of service to students. That service included many years in a variety of roles in the Madison-Plains Local School District. Janice was the district superintendent at the time of her death in September 2007.

The scholarship fund in Janice’s name awards money to graduating Madison-Plains High School seniors. There are no requirements as to what the recipients plan to study, just that they plan to further their education at college.

"We wanted to do something different than what everyone else is doing, and this is what the girls came up with," said Janice’s husband, Rick, referring to the vision his daughters, Carrie and Rachel, had for the fund.

The Streit family awarded the first scholarships in Janice’s name to Sarah Hann and Colleen Stuart at Madison-Plains’ year-end academic banquet this past spring. The Nov. 8 dinner is the first fundraiser for the scholarship fund. The number of awards given out each spring will depend on the money raised, Rick said.

Anyone who cannot attend the dinner but wishes to support the cause may send donations. Checks should be made out to "The Janice Holland Streit Scholarship Fund" and mailed in care of Rick Streit to 5700 Moorman Rd., Mount Sterling, OH 43143.
