Improved safety and security measures have resulted in the reduction of violent incidents district-wide in Groveport Madison Schools.

“The safety and security of our students and staff are a top priority within our Ddistrict,” said Groveport Madison Deputy Superintendent Paul Smathers. “It is our commitment to prioritize and implement the necessary tools needed to ensure the security of our district.”

Information presented at the Dec. 13 Groveport Madison Board of Education meeting showed that the overall incidents of violence district-wide have been reduced from 288 to 158, or 45 percent, when compared to the first quarter of the 2022 school year to 2023.

The number of fights district-wide have decreased from 132 to 67, or 49 percent, when compared to the first quarter of the 2022 school year to 2023.

The number of assaults district-wide are down from 15 to 12 when compared to the first quarter of the 2022 school year to 2023.

Incidents of aggressive physical contact have been reduced from 141 to 79, or 43 percent, when compared to the first quarter of the 2022 school year to 2023.

The presence of weapons or look-alike weapons have decreased from 70 in 2022-23 to 16 in the 2023-24 school year.

There have been 16 student expulsions in 2023 so far this year compared to 15 at the same time in 2022.

District officials believe the decreases in such incidents are due to the safety and security measures put in place in the past year. These include: the addition of four social workers; the addition of four health aides; the addition of six safety and security personnel; the purchase and installation of Evolv weapons detection systems; safer entryways; stress management and resiliency training; the creation of the District Safety Committee; safety surveys; and the institution of safety and security protocols and procedures at the district’s athletic and extracurricular events.
