Former Madison County Sheriff Jim Sabin will serve as grand marshal of the London Strawberry Festival parade, set for 5 p.m. June 22. The festival runs June 20-22 in downtown London.
Sabin retired in March after 37 years with the Sheriff’s Office, the last 14 as sheriff. He started his career in law enforcement as an auxiliary police officer in West Jefferson before becoming a dispatcher/jailor at the Sheriff’s Office. From there, he moved on to patrol duty then spent 19 years with the detective bureau, working his way through the ranks of sergeant, lieutenant and chief deputy. He was elected as sheriff in 2005.
Since retiring, Sabin has spent time camping and working with his horses, among other activities. His love of the outdoors and spending time with family are among the reasons he chose to retire as the weather was breaking.
Sabin and his wife, Tina, have two sons, Austin and Craig, and are now enjoying their four grandchildren.
Sabin said he is grateful to the people of Madison County for all they did for him while he was with the Sheriff’s Office. He added that he is honored and humbled by his selection as the Strawberry Festival parade grand marshal.
