Riders fight a good fight but come up short

The West Jefferson Roughriders traveled to Coal Grove on Nov. 4 to take on the Hornets in OHSAA Div. VI Region 23 football action. The Riders put on a good try but came up short in a 47-40 loss.

The Roughriders fell behind early 23-0 before scoring a touchdown in the second quarter on an Ethan Hostetler 18-yard run to trim the score to 23-7. After recovering an onside kick, the Riders moved the ball to the 1-yard line only to be denied before the first half ended.

Coal Grove scored a touchdown in the third quarter and another in the fourth to take a 39-13 lead after West Jefferson scored a lone touchdown on an Austin Buescher pass to Luke Taylor in the third quarter.

West Jefferson dominated the fourth quarter. With 10:09 on the clock, Buescher passed to Mason Book for a touchdown, and a 2-point conversion set up three more scores after recovering three onside kicks. Passes to Book at 8:31, Salyer at 8:01 and Book again at 7:08 put the Roughriders on top with a 40-39 lead.

A deep kickoff that went out of bounds set up the Coal Grove offense to go on a touchdown drive with Chase Hall running in for the winning touchdown with 3:47 left in the game. The Riders came up short on their final drive of the night.

Chase Hall led all rushers with 305 yards on 36 attempts and four touchdowns. Austin Buescher led West Jefferson in passing with 24 completions on 396 attempts for 316 yards and five touchdown passes.

West Jefferson ended the season with a record of 5-7.
