A new funeral home is planned for the Plain City area.

On May 6, the Madison County commissioners held a final public hearing on Rick Tidd’s petition to rezone 3.4 acres on State Route 161 in Darby Township from agricultural use to general commercial use.

Rick and Arlene Tidd plan to convert Carmel Christian Center, a church on the property, into a funeral home. They currently operate funeral homes in Mount Sterling, West Jefferson and Hilliard.

During the hearing, no one expressed opposition to the proposed zoning change. David Hughes, county building and zoning director, said the change fits with acceptable uses laid out in the county’s comprehensive land use plan. The commissioners voted 3-0 to grant the request.

The rezoning combines three lots into one. The funeral home will be located at 9720 State Rte. 161. There is no plan for cremation services at the site. Renovations are tentatively set to be complete by this October.
