Retired dairy farmer Earle Eugene “Gene” Wilson, 99, passed away quietly on Jan. 28, 2018. He lived all but the last two months of his life on the Madison Township farm where he was born.

Wilson, a 1936 graduate of Groveport High School, was a long-time member of: the Groveport Presbyterian Church, the Groveport Masonic Lodge #240 F&AM, the Walnut Chapter #172, R.A.M., the Groveport-Madison Lions Club, and the Boy Scouts of America, including 28 years as the award winning scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 71 in Groveport. As scoutmaster, he assisted 47 scouts to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. He received the Jefferson Award for Public Service in 1980 and in 1987 was inducted into the Groveport Madison High School Alumni Hall of Fame.

“I have lots of good memories of Mr. Wilson,” said Ann Culek, whose son was a member of Troop 71. “It was great to hear his stories.”

In a 2002 Groveport community oral history compiled by the Groveport Heritage and Preservation Society, Wilson said, “Scouting was a great experience for me. The scouting program is a good program and I’m just pleased that I was a small part of it.”

Of his time with the Groveport Presbyterian Church Wilson said, “I spent my life there and it’s meant a lot to me. I performed every act, from firing the church’s coal furnace to delivering the message. It’s a great part of me.”

Regarding growing up on the farm, Wilson said in the oral history, “There were always chores for all of us. As soon as you were big enough to pick up a bucket, you were expected to do something…You did the best you could.”

Gene Wilson always did his best. He served the community and his presence made it better. He will be missed.

Interment was in the Lithopolis Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Groveport Presbyterian Church, 275 College St., Groveport, OH 43125 or Simon Kenton Council, BSA, 807 Kinnear Road, Columbus, OH 43212.
