State Highway Patrol in town

Madison County’s State Highway Patrol Post originally was based at a truck weigh station located on U.S. Route 40 at State Route 42. The post later moved to a house (pictured above) on Lafayette Street in London, where it remained until 1974 when the post moved to their present quarters at U.S. Route 40 and State Route 29 in West Jefferson. The house on Lafayette remained as a private residence from 1974 until 1988, at which time Gloria Penwell purchased the building and moved Chaney & Thomas Insurance into it.

Columnist Earl Ballenger is a resident of London. If you have an old photograph to share, call 740-852-0809.
