On June 27, Canal Winchester and Groveport residents will join together online for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Canal Winchester and Groveport. The event, which was scheduled to be hosted on the track of Canal Winchester High School, will now be hosted “virtually” on Facebook due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions limiting public gatherings.
“Relay for Life gives us a chance to honor our loved ones that cancer has taken from us and celebrate our cancer survivors,” said event chairperson Meredith McCoy. “It is so important to have these celebrations because they give us hope. In the world of living with cancer, hope is everything.”
Due to restrictions on gatherings, organizers were challenged to think outside the track in 2020. The all-volunteer group developed several pre-event activities including a Spirit Week from June 22-26 and an online version of the popular “Miss Relay” contest.
On June 27, all pre-event activities will be reviewed and celebrated and Relay participants will sign on to Facebook from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Later that evening, organizers will finalize the event by hosting a drive-through display of luminarias, each lit in honor of a loved one with cancer, at the Canal Winchester High School parking lot from 9:45-10:45 p.m.
Event and pre-event details, including registration deadlines and luminaria sale information can be found on Canal Winchester Relay For Life social media sites: Facebook (@CWGroveportRelayforLife), Twitter (@CWRelayforLife), Instagram (@cwinchester_gportrelayforlife) or on the official event website, (relayforlife.org/canalwinchester-groveport).
