Canal Winchester’s Human Services Administrative Coordinator Penny Miller sits amid a sea of new toys, gently used coats, and boxes filled with groceries in continuation of a holiday tradition started in 1955 by a group of concerned citizens. Over 50 years ago, families in times of financial crisis were provided with a meal and gifts. Today, the need is just as great and 70 families are benefitting this year from the generosity of others through the Adopt-a-Family program. Miller estimates at least 300 individuals will receive assistance in 2008, in addition to the distribution of 150 fruit baskets through local churches to area shut-ins. |
