Prairie Township trustees made further progress in the destruction of the apartments located on Stiles and Mix Avenues on Feb. 13 at the regularly scheduled meeting.

After advertising for contractors interested in tackling the project, Prairie Township, with the aide of its independent consultant, Stantec Consulting Services, Inc., reviewed the bid packets and chose a contractor to proceed with the demolition.

“This is a great step," said Chairwoman Nicole Schlosser.

Robinson Construction Services, Inc. provided a project estimate totaling $76,800, an amount well below the initial estimated project cost of $100,000.

Because the buildings were acquired by Franklin County in July of 2007 as part of the “land-bank” program, Franklin County Commissioners are expected to reimburse the township with half of the total cost of the demolition as well as half of the $5,520 spent to test for asbestos on the site.

Demolition will begin after the contract is formally awarded to the construction company, which will occur at the next township trustee meeting on Feb. 27.

The contract completion date is set for March 31, but the work will be finished well before that date, said trustees.

In other news, the township will install 330 feet of wire fencing along U.S. Route 40 between Sunset Cemetery and Hamilton Run in an effort to protect the environment.

“It’s an area that’s very environmentally sensitive,” said Hatmaker.

The fence and gate will deter unauthorized traffic from disturbing 20 to 30 acres of planted prairie grasses.

The project will cost an estimated $2,895, as proposed by Web Fencing, an interested contractor, and will not exceed $2,900, as stipulated by the trustees.

Also, the Town Center Master Plan will hold a meeting on Feb. 26 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the firehouse on Ina Avenue. The meeting will allow four remaining teams to present their plans for the Town Center.
