The Prairie Township Firefighter’s Association will host its second annual Mother’s Day Flower Sale in support of the fire station.

Now in its second year, the Mother’s Day Flower Sale will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 pm. on May 9, May 10 and May 11 at Fire Station 241, 123 Inah Ave. in Columbus and Fire Station 243, 451 Hubbard Road in Galloway.

“Last year we had a decent turnout, so we decided to continue the sale this year,” said Jake Stratton, organizer of the sale. “Last year we raised $3,100 and this year we hope to match that amount or make even more.”

The firefighters will be selling hanging baskets, ferns, petunias, potted plants, whole flats of flowers and vegetable plants. Some of the vegetables they will be selling include tomatoes plants, cucumbers and a variety of different peppers.

“All the plants we will be selling are from Hoffman Florist & Greenhouses, which is located here in Prairie Township,” Stratton said. “We wanted to keep the business here in the township and support local businesses.”

The prices for plants will be comparable to larger plant retailers and credit cards, cash and check will be accepted.

“Last year everyone was very supportive of this sale and we attracted between 125 and 150 people,” Stratton said. “Kids loved looking at the firehouse while their parents shopped for plants and parents loved making it a family event.”

All proceeds from the event will support the Prairie Township Firefighters’ Association.

“This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year,” Stratton said. “Money raised from the sale goes toward buying gear and supplies that the department needs, but currently cannot afford to purchase.”

Some of the recent items the association has purchased include two ice rescue suits, a memorial in front of the fire station and new chairs.
