Practicing saving lives

Hamilton Township firefighters participated in a search and rescue three-day training exercise on March 11 at a house owned by Obetz that was once part of cemetery operations. The firefighters practiced rescuing models of an adult and a child from the smoke-filled structure. Fire Chief Martin Hafey said it is not often that firefighters can use an acquired structure for training and the department takes full advantage of the situation whenever possible. “The whole idea is to do as much as we can to train so it becomes muscle memory,” said Hafey. “When we got the call from the village, I had our training officer (Rafe Britton) look at it.” Crews rotated in and out of the building in addition to briefings at a fire station before the multi-day exercise.
