The popular pond at Westgate Park will be getting a fresh look this summer.

Jeff Anderson, a development specialist with the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department, shared plans with the Greater Hilltop Area Commission at its March 4 meeting.

The pond, known as Harder Lake, is in for a major clean up this year.

“The project is funded and on schedule,” Anderson said.

Work won’t begin until after the Bean Dinner that will be held in Westgate Park June 28. It could start in late July and be finished by the end of the year.

“We want it all wrapped up for the 2015 Bean Dinner,” Anderson said. The Bean Dinner is a tradition in the park, usually held the last Saturday in June.

Plans include draining the pond, a popular fishing spot, cleaning it and refilling it to improve the quality of the water. The concrete path around the pond, littered with goose droppings, will be altered with hopes that those droppings go into the grass. The path will make a loop around the pond.

Anderson also said the Memorial Garden will remain and new pavers will be put down.

“We will work with the Westgate Neighbors Association and the Friends of Westgate to maintain the wetland plants,” he said.

He also said work would be done toward development of the Wilson Road Park where the Camp Chase Trail is come through.

“We’re interviewing for design,” he said. “We’re looking for what people would like to have, how much it would cost.”

The park would be located behind the Hilltop Seniors complex and would be a passive park.

“Since it would be at the trail head, we’re looking for parking spaces so users can get on and off the trail,” Anderson said.

Commission chairman Chuck Patterson said he would like to see improvements made to Wilson Road first, noting that vehicles often hit 50 miles per hour coming down the hill over the railroad tracks.
