Installation of new playground equipment at Westwood Park in West Jefferson has begun.
Crews started work the week of Dec. 26. John Mitchell, the village’s director of public service, expects the first part of the installation to be completed approximately two weeks from now.

Equipment geared for children ages 2 to 12 years old is going in now at the front of the park where two of the old tennis courts used to be. Slides, swings, climbing apparatus, and a merry-go-round with room for wheelchairs are among the pieces being installed. This playground will be divided into two areas: one geared to 2- to 5-year olds; the other geared to 5- to 12-year-olds.
Once the playground for younger children is complete, crews will move on to a second play area located at the back of the park for ages 13 and older. It will consist of an eight-station obstacle course.
Rubber surfaces will go down under both playgrounds this spring.
The playground equipment is one part of the village’s overall improvement plan for the park. The basketball court has already been refurbished. One of the old tennis courts has been converted. It now doubles as a tennis court or two pickleball courts. The nets will go up when the weather breaks.
The final project will be installation of trails throughout the park. The hope is that the trails will go in this year, Mitchell said.
