The Plain City Food Pantry has occupied a leased storefront on West Main Street since 1978. The expanding program aims to purchase that property and three adjacent storefronts, but needs the community’s help to make a down payment.
The non-profit, all-volunteer organization provides food, clothing and miscellaneous household items to people in need in Plain City and in surrounding areas in Madison and Union counties.
“We’ve placed a bid to purchase the entire building complex from 156 W. Main St. through 168 W. Main St.,” said Ray Meister, the pantry’s president and CEO.
The purchase price is $125,000. Meister said the pantry can handle monthly mortgage payments but needs help with the initial down payment of $28,000. Volunteers hope to collect enough donations to make the down payment by the end of August.
“We need the extra space so desperately because we have so many additional services we want to offer,” Meister said.
The pantry already provides food to over 240 families each month. Last year, the pantry gave out 500,000 pounds of food, equivalent to 160,000 meals. Other items offered include toiletries, paper products, soap, detergent and used clothing, toys and books. The pantry recently shifted its thrift store from the back of its original location to a streetfront spot at 164 W. Main. The grand reopening was Aug. 9.
“Our volunteers have lots of ideas for how to use the additional space,” Meister said. Possibilities include meeting areas, Bible study space, and a display/storage area for small furniture and appliances.
Due to increasing need in the community, the pantry recently extended its operating hours and may do so again soon, Meister said. Hours currently stand at: 9 a.m.-noon Monday, Wednesday and Friday and 10 a.m.-noon Saturday.
The pantry is supported by churches in the area, as well as businesses, schools, civic organizations and individuals.
