The Plain City Police Department was recently named the February 2021 Agency of the Month for their outstanding community policing efforts.
In 2018, the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police and the Law Enforcement Foundation formed the Community Relations and Engagement Committee to work with agencies of all sizes and capabilities to highlight the positive work that is being done around Ohio each and every day.
In 2019, the committee began a new program, Sharing Ohio’s Best, to bring awareness to the work that agencies do all over Ohio to promote positive policing.
The committee compiles submissions from agencies and selects one each month for recognition. Each agency is eligible. Typically, the committee focuses on creativity and how programs impact the individual communities. Recent programs receiving recognition focus on teen driving, assistance for people with disabilities, and community safety.
“It is our pleasure to recognize the outstanding efforts by the Plain City Police Department for their community policing commitment that helps make us stronger,” the committee recently announced. “We congratulate Chief (Dale) McKee and the hardworking members of his agency that have gone above and beyond to provide quality community policing ideas to their citizens.”
The Plain City Police Department has numerous programs to help achieve and maintain community connections. Among them are:
- Safe Business Practices–includes robbery awareness and prevention, shoplifting prevention and detection, and placement of surveillance cameras.
- Workplace Violence–addresses various types and frequency of workplace violence and addresses the issue.
- Active Shooter Training–includes a discussion of past events, trends, and awareness of active shooters, with education on active shooter preparedness.
- Educate Kids–includes safety topics for school-age children, teenage drug and alcohol addiction and awareness for parents, and new teen driver training.
- Pioneer Project–features classroom presentations and outdoor exercises on motor vehicle laws and roadside interactions with police as they pertain to impaired driving. The presentations are provided to Jonathan Alder Local Schools, Tolles Career and Technical Center, Plainview Christian School and Shekinah Christian School.
The Plain City Police Department employs 11 full-time officers, including the chief, one lieutenant, one sergeant, one detective and seven patrol officers, including a K9 handler and K9 Andor. The department also employs a part-time officer and a reserve officer who support the police department and community in a variety of ways.
Plain City lies within two counties (Union and Madison) and serves a growing community of approximately 4,500 residents. The police department strives to maintain an excellent relationship with its citizens and strongly believes in the value of community policing.
The Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police is a nonprofit organization dedicated to continuing professionalism and innovation among police executives to assure the continued success of the law enforcement community. Established in 1928, the association is a fully staffed organization, offering a broad range of professional, educational and informational services.
The Law Enforcement Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization established in 1985 by members of the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police. The mission is to create safer communities through the continuing education of law enforcement executives, education for children through trained Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) officers, and education of law enforcement personnel on special topics as trends indicate.
The foundation is the only entity in Ohio certified to train DARE officers who teach children and parents about drug abuse prevention, internet safety, bullying, decision-making skills, and personal responsibility.
Additionally, the foundation is the only entity to provide three-tiered, executive-level management training for law enforcement, culminating in a masters- level certification in law enforcement management.
