Runners get ready at the starting line at a previous Pi Day 5K.

What do you get when you combine mathematics, fitness, and community service? You get the Pi Day 5K!

Reynoldsburg Schools’ (HS)2 STEM Academy and BELL Early College Academy will host the third annual Pi Day 5K on March 10 at 8:30 a.m. at Reynoldsburg High School’s Livingston Avenue Campus, 6699 E. Livingston Avenue, Reynoldsburg.

The Pi Day 5K gets its name from the mathematical transcendental number that is approximately 3.14159 and represents the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle. The 5K run is hosted by the (HS)2 and BELL Academies in celebration of the number Pi, which is often rounded to 3.14. So, the fun run/walk is 3.14 miles, just a little over a 5K.

“We came up with the idea for Pi Day 5K a few years ago as part of our annual Pi Day festivities at school,” said Maxwell Snyderman, (HS)2 STEM Academy math department head. “We wanted to celebrate it more and decided to put on a race as close to Pi Day (March 14 or 3-14) as we could.”

Snyderman said the math department at the Livingston Campus is putting on the event.

“They have coordinated the event the past three years,” said Snyderman. “We have put on this race the last three years to help raise funds for student programming and activities, as well as support Reynoldsburg families in need. Some of the proceeds that we raise also go to local businesses, such as Blacklick Woods Metro Park, for allowing us to use the park for the event. In the past we have raised close to $1,200 and this year our goal is to raise about the same, if not exceed it and get closer to $1,500.”

Snyderman said the starting point for the race is at the Livingston Avenue Campus on the Columbus State side of the building. From there the course goes in front of the school and enters Blacklick Woods.

“There is a turnaround in the park where runners will then begin to run back where they came from and finish where they started,” said Snyderman.

Registration cost is $25 for individual, $20 for team/family, $15 for staff/students, $10 for children ages 6-10, and children 5 and under are free. There is also the option to purchase a t-shirt for $10 without registering. If you register before March 1, you will get a t-shirt with the registration. Participants can register by going to RunSignup.com and searching for “Reynoldsburg Pi Day 5k.” Registration ends March 8.

Parking is available in the east or front parking lots at the school.
