Christy Shepard, who works in radiology at Doctors Hospital, adjusts a bicycle helmet on fourth grader Cody Beesler, 9. Shepard talked with students at Prairie Norton Elementary School about safety when riding bicycles. One of the prime safety habits to practice, she said, was always wearing a helmet. Health Safety Day was presented by staff members at the nearby hospital.

First grader Haley Hall, 7, practices making a 9-1-1 call during a Health Safety Day at Prairie Lincoln Elementary School. Prairie Township Fire Chief Steve Feustel had set up the portable education unit at the program where he talked with children about how, when and where to make such a call. As the children dialed 9-1-1, Feustel punched buttons on a hand-held unit that prompted specific questions from the operator.
