Highland Elementary third graders will perform an original play titled “The Scientific Method Saves the Day” at 10 a.m. on April 7, at the Columbus Performing Arts Center, 549 Franklin Ave., as part of the Phoenix Theatre for Children arts initiative.
The play is a light comedy about how a group of parents use the scientific method to find out if having a healthy breakfast will make their children’s grades better. The audience will see what happens when the Principal and the Donut King try to sabotage the experiment and the healthy foods come to life! A scientific method rap adds to the excitement of the play.
The process began in the fall when Phoenix Theatre Playwright/Curriculum Specialist Joan Page taught the students about playwrights and the parts of a play. From there, the class agreed on a topic – science, and a concept – the scientific method, on which to base their play.
It took the third graders six weeks to write the seven act play. In December, Phoenix Theatre Associate Education Director, Heather Burley taught the students basic acting techniques, and helped the students take their words and bring them to life as exciting characters.
