Karissa Smith, 11, of Pleasant Township poses with Franklin County Commissioner Paula Brooks (right) and COBA Treasurer Barry Conrad, while holding a frame of bees on her last day of beekeeping class. Smith was the first recipient of a $500 scholarship from COBA (Central Ohio Beekeepers Association) this spring. The scholarship was authorized through the county to promote beekeeping and help the honeybee population. Smith became interested in beekeeping from a friend. She then began reading articles about the dwindling honeybee population and wanted to help. Smith plans to have a honeybee exhibit at the Franklin County Fair.
