Peebles department store in London will close this fall and reopen as Gordmans, a discount department store selling apparel and home decor merchandise.
Peebles and Gordmans are part of Stage Stores, a department store retailer based in Houston, Texas. Stage Stores acquired the Gordmans assets in 2017. Along with its Bealls, Palais Royal and Goody’s chains, the company owns more than 750 department stores across 42 states.
Stage Stores is opening 36 Gordmans stores in June and 13 more in September. Of those, 27 are in Ohio. The London store, located at 222 Lafayette St., is one of the openings slated for September.
“Converting stores typically close in the days leading up to the Gordmans grand opening,” said Blakeley Graham, a Stage Stores spokesperson. “The number of employees vary from store to store, but all current Peebles associates will be offered jobs at Gordmans.”
The Gordmans chain is growing because customers respond positively to its “off-price” offerings, which mean “bigger deals and smaller prices,” Graham added.
“Gordmans, which has been delighting shoppers for more than 100 years, has fresh new merchandise deliveries arriving weekly,” she said. “There will always be something new to discover when it comes to popular name brand apparel, home decor, footwear, gifts, accessories, fragrances and more for the whole family.”
Sydney Edens, media liaison for Gordmans/Stage Stores, said the company will share more details about the London store transition as plans progress.
The London Peebles store opened in April 2008.
