Parking on the fairgrounds looks different for this year’s Madison County Fair.

“Based on feedback from last year and safety concerns expressed over the years, we have made a significant change to the parking plan,” said Paul Gross, Madison County Senior Fair Board president.

As part of a multi-phase improvement plan for the fairgrounds, the fair board has created a new parking area in the infield of the former horse-racing track. During fair week, on-site parking is no longer available anywhere else on the fairgrounds.

All vehicular traffic will enter and exit the grounds from Garfield Avenue. The Elm Street entrance is now open to pedestrian traffic only. The setup is designed to keep vehicular traffic on the outskirts of the fairgrounds rather than driving through the heart of the grounds where pedestrian traffic is heavy.

Parking at the infield includes spots designated for handicap parking. The Madison County Shriners Club will offer free golf cart rides to and from the parking area for individuals with mobility challenges.

Hundreds of spaces are available in the new parking area. They will be well marked. In the future, permanent fences will enclose the area.

“We should have capacity to handle all vehicle traffic we get,” Gross said.
